Clinton Bankston Jr. is the killer; he was a teenager when he murdered five people in Athens, Georgia, in 1987. In May 1988, Bankston pleaded guilty but mentally ill to five counts of malice murder. He avoided the death penalty because a Georgia Supreme Court ruling prohibited executing anyone under 17 at the time of their crime. He received five consecutive life sentences.
