Gary Gilmore was an American criminal who became famous for demanding his execution after murdering two men in Utah. Gilmore was executed by firing squad on January 17, 1977 and was the first person executed in the United States in nearly a decade, following the U.S. Supreme Court's reinstatement of capital punishment in 1976.
