Scott Falater attacked his wife of over 20 years. He stabbed her 44 times with a hunting knife in their backyard, dragged her to the family swimming pool, and held her head underwater to drown her. During his 1999 trial, Falater did not deny killing his wife but claimed he had absolutely no memory of the event because he was sleepwalking. His defense argued that he suffered from severe parasomnia (somnambulism). They contended that he had gone outside in his sleep to fix a faulty pool pump, and when his wife tried to intervene or wake him, he attacked her in an unconscious state. In January 2000, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
