Tommy Arthur was an Alabama death row inmate convicted of the 1982 murder-for-hire of Troy Wicker in Muscle Shoals. At the time of the murder, Arthur was out on a prison work-release program for a previous 1977 murder conviction. In July 2008, Arthur’s legal team presented a sworn affidavit from Gilbert claiming that he, not Arthur, shot Troy Wicker. This last-minute confession prompted the Alabama Supreme Court to grant Arthur a stay of execution. Gilbert claimed he killed Wicker when he was 17 years old and that he had been having an affair with Judy Wicker. Judy Wicker strongly denied ever knowing or meeting Gilbert.
