Willis V. McCall was never legally convicted of a crime, despite being investigated 49 times for misconduct, civil rights violations, inmate abuse, and murder. McCall was the white supremacist sheriff of Lake County, Florida from 1944 to 1972 and operated above the law during the Jim Crow era. He was officially charged with crimes late in his career, but an all-white jury acquitted him.
